2003 Mongolian calendar

2003 Mongolian calendar

In 2001, I met my now husband and wonderful partner, Al. We quickly married and were sent off on a Luce Scholarship to Mongolia together. It was our 'honey year'.br/ It was quite cold and we had a pet hedgehog.br/ The point of the scholarship was to have me work in my line of business (science and medical illustration) in a country in Asia.br/ Thus came about the first of many many collaborative projects of Level Five Graphics - a calendar of plants characteristic of the Eastern Steppe of Mongolia. Water colors and pencil work done from herbarium specimens, were by me. Typography and typesetting - by Al. The whole thing got printed by Admon Printing, of Ulaan Baatar, for free in advance of sales. It was my first commercial calendar. They made a run of 500 copies.br/ br/ We completed the project in two months (September and October) with the great help of the Mongolian Botanical Institute. Printing and sales happened in early November. It was hard to accomplish the work that fast, but a rich learning experience and a treasured keepsake from a land far away.
