Wearing a swim buoy does a two-fold service. It keeps _you_ visible to any water traffic. And it could potentially render a public service one day.
Buoys are not sold as or called "safety equipment". However if you encounter a person in distress who is in mild trouble, and still able to cooperate with the rescuer - try towing them by having them hold onto the buoy. It is surprisingly light and efficient!
