The Encounter

The Encounter

This is a sketch from my series "Swim Postcards" that I do to capture memories, feelings and fleeting glimpses from swimming in the San Francisco Bay.br/br/In early November, Laura, Greg and I went swimming. We did one cove (our usual swim).br/br/This was towards the tail end of the frenzied pelican hunting activity, and there were lots of seals and sea lions around --gt; probably hunting for the same fish.br/br/As we swung out along Muni Pier, we became conscious of a group of three seals approaching us from the right. I don't remember any flippers moving, or even any of their muscles moving --gt; I just remember the whole mass of them (like a single "sculptural group") gliding unstopably towards us as if in some magic dream...br/br/They all had their mouths open. They came very close to us and just stayed put, looking at us. br/br/Three of us; three of them. br/br/Finally the one up front broke the spell - he dove right towards us into the water. The three of us shifted uneasily, kicking our legs into each other - and causing ourselves some alarm. We collected ourselves and swam towards the opening.
